The Exchange of Rings

When I meet with couples to create their personalized wedding ceremony, I often ask ifthey would like to include a Unity Ceremony, such as some common ones with candles, sand, wine, or other symbols of unity. If a couple decides not to, I often tell how the exchange of wedding rings is actually the original unity ceremony. Exchanging rings dates back at least to ancient Egypt, where couples used braided reeds or leather bands.

The circle symbolizes eternal love without end. Eventually, gold and other metals replaced simple fibers. The materials thy are made from remind us that love is precious and pure. Above all, they are a gift freely given, symbolizing that by its very nature love is freely given for the other, without reservation or limitation. Because that’s what love is- an unending circle of giving, precious and pure uniting two individuals in a bond that is made to last.
